What is the best way to choose a Realtor to sell your home? Search the internet for “how to choose a realtor” and you’ll find lots of blog posts with titles like
“5 tips on How to Choose a Realtor”
“Best 5 tips for choosing a Realtor”
“How to choose a real estate agent”
or even
“14 Tips For Choosing The Right Real Estate Agent For Your Property Search Or Sale”
No doubt a list of tips can help you get started on finding a realtor. But the tips will only assist you in eliminating the least qualified Realtors. The tips are often very general, giving advice like “Find someone who has your best interests at heart.” or “Look for honesty”. Despite some people’s biases, I can tell you that most experienced and professional Realtors are going to have your best interests at heart. Most are going to be honest. Most of us are in this profession because we genuinely like helping people.
You’ve followed the tips, so now what?
So you’ve followed the tips and you now have a better idea of the general qualifications. Maybe you’ve got a shortlist of Realtors with honesty, integrity, local knowledge, and good reviews. You’ve probably got some recommendations from friends as well. What will help you find the one real estate agent who is the best fit for you and your home?

The best way to choose a realtor is to gain a thorough understanding of the home sales process.
You need to understand the home sales process.
Invest the time to understand the sales process and you’ll be properly equipped to choose the best realtor. Think of it as a job interview where you are the employer. What are the qualifications of the real estate agent you want to work with? Some qualifications would be:
- Skilled in setting a price that brings a quick sale at the highest possible price.
- Able to direct you in how to make your home attractive.
- Show that they can guide you through the entire experience with the least amount of stress and disruption.
- Clearly lay out your legal rights and obligations.
- Skilled in negotiations.
- Provide a marketing plan that will expose your home to qualified buyers.
Do you know how house prices are determined? Or what a good marketing plan is? Do you know for yourself what makes a home attractive to buyers? If you do, then you can judge whether or not a Realtor will do a good job at selling your home.
How do you gain this understanding for yourself?
